How to Get Rid of the Skunk Smell When Your Dog Gets Sprayed

Household Tips· Life and Home

get rid of skunk smell

Yuck!  If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to discover your dog has been sprayed by a skunk you know how truly horrible this experience is.  We’ve all driven by a dead skunk on the road only to have the stench hit you just when you think you’re past it.  Well dealing with a freshly sprayed dog is a little A LOT worse!

I never realized how awful skunk spray really was until Barney was sprayed.  In the face.  At a picnic.  While the whole family screamed.  Yes, it was terrible.  Oily is how I would describe the stench.  It was a very pungent oily smell that burned your nose and lungs.  I can’t even imagine how Barney felt!  I immediately started googling how to get rid of the smell and came across my now tried and true magic potion.

Magic Skunk Smell Remover Potion

What you’ll need:

  • Paper Towels
  • 1-2 tsp Dawn Dish Soap
  • 32 oz 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1/4 C Baking Soda (Arm & Hammer or generic)
  • Large Bowl/Container (A Rubbermaid or Tupperware bowl work well)
  • Old Towels (You will be throwing them away when you’re finished here)
  • Grocery Store Bag or Garbage Bag

Here’s what you’re going to do to get rid of that skunk smell

Okay so first you’re going to get the dog to the room where you’re going to de-skunk them, probably the bathroom or somewhere you can easily wash the dog.  Take my advice and don’t let the dog walk to the room themselves unless you don’t mind your house smelling like eau de skunk for a couple of days ;).  Mix the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn in your container and set aside.  DO NOT COVER.  Locate the area on the dog that was hit by the spray.  Using your paper towels, dab up as much of the oil as possible.  Use dabbing motions so as not to spread the oil more.

While the dog is in the tub start massaging the mixture into the fur concentrating on the sprayed area. Don’t worry if you get it anywhere else on your dog just be sure to keep it away from their eyes.  Once you have the area fully coated allow it to soak on him for at least twenty minutes or as long as your pooch will tolerate it.  Finally, rinse and dry.  Discard any remaining solution and put your paper towels and bath towels in your bag and throw away.  This has been a God-send each of the three times Barney has gotten sprayed.  As a matter of fact,r he’s been able to sleep in our bed after each spray when he’s been washed with this “potion”.   Hopefully your pets never get sprayed but if they do at least you have a remedy that really works.

Our dog got sprayed tonight, and the Dawn/baking soda/hydrogen peroxide mixture is what I used, too.

Happy Easter!! ✝️🐰🐥 Happy Easter!! ✝️🐰🐥
Say hello to my little peep. Okay, he's not real Say hello to my little peep. Okay, he's not real but isn't he adorable? I whipped him up in less than 15 minutes. Super easy and super cute!! You'll need:
Yarn
Orange felt
Black felt, beads or giggly eye
Pipe cleaner
Glue
Scissors
Wire cutter (optional) Wrap yarn around 4 fingers fifty - sixty times. Carefully slide yarn off your fingers and gather another piece around the middle. Pull it tight and tie a knot. Cut the loops carefully then trim the puff until the ball is a nice uniform shape. (This was the most time consuming part.) Now wrap more yarn around 2 fingers fifty - sixty times and do the same as you did with the first ball. This smaller one will be the head. Glue the head to the body. Cut a small beak (triangle) from the orange felt and glue it to the head. Either cut two small circles for the eyes from the black felt or use beads/giggly eyes. Glue those to the head above the beak. Bend your pipe cleaner in half then cut it. Each side will be one leg and foot. Starting at one end of the pipe cleaner start bending about 1/4 - 1/2 an inch in and then back out again to form three toes then wrap the long part up through the middle of the toes to finish the leg. Put a dab of glue on the ends and place it up into the underside of the body. Allow glue to set and then arrange feet and toes so your peep can stand. Now give him a name. Just kidding! Though I won't judge you if you do. 😉

💛 I love seeing my daffodils each spring. I do 💛 I love seeing my daffodils each spring. I don't have too much luck with bulbs around here partly because of the squirrels and other animals digging them up and my heavy clay soil. Still these seem to like their spot and that makes me happy. Can't wait for the tulips to bloom next... 🌼🌷
